How to Return to the UAE After More Than 180 Days Abroad
The UAE 180-day rule for residence visa holders: who it applies to, who is exempt, how to get a return permit from abroad and what to do if the visa has lapsed.
The short answer
A standard UAE residence visa becomes inactive automatically once you have been outside the UAE for more than 180 days in a row, even if the visa itself has not expired. You will then be refused entry at the check-in at the departure airport unless you hold a return permit. Apply for it from abroad before you fly: through GDRFA for a Dubai visa, or through ICP Smart Services for a visa from any other emirate. You need a valid reason such as work, study or medical treatment, and the approval usually comes within about two or three working days. You then have 30 days to enter with the return permit. Golden, Green and Blue Visa holders are exempt, which means the 180-day rule does not apply.

Who This Applies To
The 180-day rule applies to anyone with a standard UAE residence visa: employees and family members sponsored. Free zone visas follow the same rule as mainland visas. For company owners on a partner visa or investor visa, usually a 360-day rule applies.
The visa does not show as cancelled while you are abroad. Most people only find out at check-in on the way to the UAE, where the visa is shown as inactive and they are refused entry. In rare cases, the airlines may still let you board, so being able to check in is no sign that you will be allowed to enter the UAE.
You can stay abroad longer without losing your visa if you are:
- A Golden, Green or Blue Visa holder, as long as the visa is still valid
- The foreign wife of an Emirati citizen, or the husband of an Emirati woman who sponsors him
- A student enrolled abroad, with proof of enrolment
- Sent abroad for medical treatment, with a medical report approved by the UAE medical authorities
- A public sector employee on assignment or training abroad, and your family
- A domestic worker accompanying a sponsor who is abroad for treatment or on diplomatic duty
Investors with a valid partner visa or investor visa are also listed as an exception on the UAE government portal, but this is not applied consistently. Please check the active status of your visa if you have crossed 180 days abroad.
Before You Start
Count the days. Day one is the day after you left the UAE, and the count only stops when you enter the UAE again. If you are not sure of your last departure date, it is in your passport stamps or on the GDRFA or UAE ICP App.
Then check which authority issued your visa. A visa issued in Dubai goes to GDRFA, any other emirate goes to UAE ICP. The emirate is printed on the electronic visa document, or shown in the UAE ICP App.
For the return permit, have ready:
- A copy of your passport and Emirates ID
- Proof of the reason you stayed abroad, for example a letter from your employer, an enrolment letter from your university or a medical report
- UAE Pass, to log in to GDRFA or UAE ICP App
- A card to pay the fine for each month beyond 180 days and the service fee, both shown in the application
Check that your visa still has more than 30 days to run. If it does not, the return permit is not possible, and you will need a new visa (see below).
Step by Step
Step 1: Do not book your flight yet
Without an approved return permit you will not be allowed to check in at the departure airport, or you will be refused entry into the UAE and sent back, often on the next flight. Apply first for the return permit and fly once you have the approval.
Step 2: Apply from abroad
Dubai visa. Log in to the GDRFA website or App with UAE Pass, create a new application and choose the return permit for residents outside the UAE for more than six months. Select your reason (study, health, crisis or disaster, or other) and upload the proof.
Visa from another emirate. Log in to ICP Smart Services or the UAE ICP App and apply for the return permit if you stayed outside the UAE for more than six months. If your employer sponsors you, the employer can submit the application for you.
Step 3: Wait for the approval
GDRFA and UAE ICP both usually decide within about two or three working days. Approval is not automatic: the reason has to be credible and backed by documents. The return permit is sent by email.
Step 4: Enter within 30 days
You must enter the UAE within 30 days of the approval date, and before your residence visa expires. Carry the return permit with you when you fly.
Step 5: Check your visa after entry
Once you are back, check in the GDRFA or UAE ICP App that your residence visa shows as valid. If it is due for renewal soon, renew it now so you are not caught out on your next long trip.
If Your Visa Has Already Lapsed
If the return permit is refused, or your visa has expired, the old visa has to be cancelled and a new one issued. Your sponsor does both:
- Employees: your employer cancels the old visa from inside the UAE and applies for a new entry permit for you.
- Company owners: your own company is the sponsor, so whoever handles its immigration matters (your PRO or our team) cancels the visa and applies for the new entry permit.
- Family members: the family sponsor cancels and reapplies in the same way.
You then enter on the new entry permit and complete the medical test to receive the new residence visa. Your company’s Immigration establishment card and Immigration file need to be in order before this can start.
How Long It Takes
| Situation | Typical time |
|---|---|
| Return permit, GDRFA or UAE ICP | About 2 or 3 working days |
| Window to enter after approval | 30 days |
| New visa after the old one lapsed | About 1 to 3 weeks, from cancellation to new visa |
Common Mistakes
- Flying back without checking. Being able to check in does not mean you will be let in at UAE passport control.
- Assuming a company owner’s visa is exempt. Owning a company is not an exemption, and investor visas are not treated consistently. Only the Golden, Green and Blue Visas are reliably exempt.
- Waiting until the visa nearly expires. The return permit needs more than 30 days left on the visa when you apply.
- Forgetting the family. Each family member has their own 180 days. Children at school abroad or a spouse who stays behind longer can lose their visas while yours is fine.
- Applying from inside the UAE. The return permit must be requested from abroad. It cannot be sorted out at the UAE airport on arrival.
- Treating the old relief as still valid. The 2026 relief for residents stranded abroad has ended.
When to Get Help
If you are still within 180 days, the simplest fix is a short trip to the UAE. If you have passed it and have a clear reason with documents, the return permit is quite manageable through the GDRFA or UAE ICP App. Help is worth it when your visa is close to expiry, when the return permit has been refused, when you own the company that sponsors you, or when several family members are affected at once. Our visa team handles return permits, cancellations and new visas for owners, employees and their families, and can apply while you are still abroad.
Common questions
Do the 180 days have to be in a row?
Yes. The rule counts days in a row outside the UAE, not the total days you spend abroad in a year. Every entry into the UAE starts the count again, so a short trip back before day 180 keeps a standard visa valid.
I own a company in the UAE. Does my investor or partner visa protect me?
Not reliably. The UAE government portal lists investors with valid residence visas among the exceptions, but GDRFA and UAE ICP do not apply this the same way to every investor or partner visa, and owning a company is not an exemption on its own. Unless you hold a Golden Visa, plan as if the 180-day limit applies to you.
Can I apply for the return permit before I reach 180 days?
No. You can only apply once you have been outside the UAE for more than 180 days, and you must apply from abroad. If you know you will be away longer, plan a trip back before day 180 instead, or apply as soon as day 181 has passed and before you book your flight.
Can my family stay abroad while my own visa stays valid?
Each family member's 180 days are counted on their own. If your spouse or children spend more than 180 days abroad, their visas become inactive even if yours stays valid. Children studying abroad can be an exception, but only with proof of enrolment.
What if my visa expires while I am abroad?
The return permit is only possible while the visa is still valid, with more than 30 days left when you apply. Once the visa has expired, your sponsor has to cancel it and apply for a new entry permit and a new residence visa.
I left during the airspace closure in March 2026. Does the relief still apply?
No. The temporary relief for residents stranded abroad in 2026 has ended, and normal rules apply again. Many residents who left in early March 2026 and stayed away passed the 180-day mark by September 2026.
Does the Golden Visa have any limit on time abroad?
No. Golden Visa holders can stay outside the UAE for any length of time and enter whenever they want, as long as the visa is still valid. Family members sponsored on a Golden Visa are reported to be covered too, but the official pages name only the holder, so check each family member's status with GDRFA or UAE ICP before a long stay abroad.
