Tax Compliance in Dubai – FTA Reports Major Increase in Inspection Activities6 min read

In 2024, the UAE’s Federal Tax Authority (FTA) significantly expanded its tax compliance efforts, leveraging digital technologies and conducting over 93,000 field inspections across the Emirates. This substantial expansion in regulatory oversight shows how seriously the UAE takes its role in maintaining a fair and compliant business environment.

Key Developments in UAE Tax Compliance

Field inspections jumped by 135% compared to the previous year, showing the FTA’s enhanced focus on tax compliance and consumer protection. These intensified efforts have led to several significant outcomes:

Enhanced Market Surveillance

The scale of market surveillance has grown considerably, with field inspections rising from 40,000 in 2023 to 93,000 in 2024. During these inspections, the FTA collected tax dues and associated fines totaling over AED 348 million. The authority’s enforcement efforts led to the seizure of 11 million non-compliant tobacco products lacking proper digital tax stamps and the confiscation of 3.9 million packages of other excise goods.

Digital Innovation in Tax Monitoring

According to the FTA’s Director General, digital technology plays a crucial role in improving tax compliance. The Authority’s digital tax stamp system, introduced more than six years ago, has become an essential tool in the UAE’s tax compliance framework. This system effectively tracks and monitors non-compliant products while streamlining customs inspection processes. It helps prevent the sale of products that don’t meet tax requirements and ensures all tax payments are properly verified electronically.

Impact on Dubai Businesses

For businesses operating in Dubai, these changes make it clear just how important proper tax compliance procedures have become. The FTA’s increased inspection activities and use of digital monitoring systems mean that companies must:

  1. Ensure all tax documentation is current and accurate
  2. Implement proper digital tracking systems for applicable products
  3. Stay informed about tax compliance requirements
  4. Maintain proper registration and documentation
