The Federal Tax Authority (FTA) has issued an important reminder for individuals conducting business activities in the UAE to register for Corporate Income Tax by 31.03.2025 or face penalties.
This deadline applies to all natural persons (individuals) who conducted business activities in the UAE during 2024 and had a turnover exceeding AED 1 million. Failing to register by the deadline will result in an administrative penalty of AED 10,000.
Who Needs to Register?
The registration requirement applies to:
– Individual business owners
– Sole proprietorships
– Individual partners in joint ventures
– Any natural person engaged in business activities in the UAE
If you are wondering whether you qualify as a “natural person” for tax purposes, the FTA defines this as any individual human being, regardless of age or residency status.
Important Dates to Remember
If your business revenue exceeded AED 1 million by 31.07.2024, you must:
- Register for Corporate Income Tax by 31.03.2025
- Submit your Corporate Income Tax Return by 30.09.2025
The Registration
While the FTA notes that natural persons can access the EmaraTax digital platform to register, the reality is often more complicated. Many business owners face significant challenges during this process:
- Managing the complex EmaraTax platform without making costly errors
- Understanding which specific forms and documentation are required
- Ensuring all information is accurately entered to prevent application rejections
- Managing the registration while simultaneously running your business
- Interpreting technical tax terminology and requirements
- Dealing with potential system delays close to the deadline
These challenges can transform what should be a simple registration into a time-consuming and stressful process, potentially leading to missed deadlines and AED 10,000 penalties.
