Why Swiss Companies Are Expanding to the UAE

The DMCC (Dubai Multi Commodities Centre) recently announced that nearly 450 Swiss companies are now registered with the free zone.
This comes alongside a 120% surge in UAE–Swiss non-oil trade during the first half of 2025.
For Swiss firms, and more broadly those from the DACH region, Dubai is becoming an increasingly important base for global growth.
A Growing Bridge Between Switzerland and the UAE
Switzerland and the UAE share more than a strong trading relationship. Both value stability, efficiency, and international connectivity. For Swiss companies that face high taxes and slow regulatory processes at home, Dubai offers an alternative: a business environment with competitive taxation, direct access to regional markets, and a streamlined approach to licensing.
Choosing the Right Setup Route
The choice of setup route is crucial.
DMCC attracts firms in commodities and finance, while IFZA (International Free Zone Authority) appeals to service providers and small and medium businesses with its flexible licensing.
For companies that want to operate directly in the UAE market, a mainland license through Dubai DET (Department of Economy and Tourism) is often the most practical route.
Each option comes with different benefits and obligations, and selecting the right structure at the outset saves significant time and cost later.
Obstacles for Newcomers
Setting up in Dubai is attractive, but it comes with details that can slow down companies if not appropriately managed.
One of the most common obstacles is choosing the wrong authority for setup. A company that starts in a free zone not suited to its activities may later discover restrictions on trading, additional costs for restructuring, or even the need to start over.
Banking is a common hurdle. Opening a corporate account often requires a clear business plan, shareholder documentation, and compliance checks that can take weeks if not prepared correctly. For many Swiss firms used to highly structured banking at home, the process can feel unpredictable without local guidance.
Visa and residence permits also require careful planning. Business owners, employees, and dependents all fall under different categories, and choosing the right visa type from the start ensures smoother renewals and fewer disruptions to daily operations.
Individuals and companies that try to manage these without support often face unnecessary delays, additional costs, and regulatory complications. With the right expertise, the transition into Dubai can be smooth and efficient.
