Doing Business in the UAE from Germany, Austria and Switzerland

UAE government delegation recently completed a working visit to Düsseldorf and Munich, holding more than 15 meetings with German industrial groups, energy companies, engineering firms and research institutions. The discussions covered manufacturing, energy, water technology, mobility, digital infrastructure and space systems.

The visit shows a trading relationship that has grown considerably. Trade between Germany and the UAE exceeded EUR 13.56 billion in 2025. German imports from the UAE increased by more than 50 per cent over the year, and approximately 2,000 German companies maintain an office in the UAE.

Strong Trade Growth

What is important to note here is the balance across different trade categories. UAE exports to Germany surged by 110 per cent, while imports rose by 15 per cent and re-exports increased by approximately 10 per cent.

Among European Union countries, Germany is the UAE’s second-largest trading partner, and ranks 13th globally overall.

This diversified growth pattern suggests deepening integration rather than dependence on a single trade corridor.

The EU trade negotiations

The UAE and the EU (European Union) are negotiating a CEPA (Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement) covering tariffs, services access and investment protection. This is nonetheless a reasonable point at which to review customs classifications and the routing of goods into the UAE. A company that already understands its landed cost will be in a position to respond if terms improve.

Considerations for German Companies

The UAE business environment offers advantages for German companies, including a location connecting markets across the Gulf, Africa, and Asia, infrastructure, and a pro-business regulatory framework. However, successful establishment requires careful planning.

German companies can choose between UAE free zones and mainland jurisdictions, each with distinct benefits and restrictions. Selecting the proper jurisdiction depends on your business model, whether you plan to serve the UAE domestic market, operate regionally, or focus on international trade.

Understanding UAE corporate structures, tax regulations, and compliance requirements is important, as is securing the right visa categories for your team.
